MMS delivers comprehensive marine appraisal services supported by a highly experienced, multi-disciplinary team of surveyors. Their combined technical expertise and real-world industry knowledge enable accurate inspection and evaluation of inland shallow draft vessels, Great Lakes fleets, and ocean-going vessels, with a strong focus on condition, maintenance, and overall asset performance.
Our appraisal services are relied upon by banks, financial institutions, equipment leasing companies, insurance providers, and corporate clients. Common applications include asset-based lending and leasing, establishing and reviewing insurance values, post-loss valuations, tax reporting (including estate and corporate filings), and purchase price allocation for mergers and acquisitions. All MMS appraisals are performed in full compliance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).
We utilize three recognized approaches to valuation, applying those most appropriate to each assignment:
- Cost Approach – Based on the principle of substitution, this method evaluates the cost to replace an asset with one of similar utility, adjusted for depreciation, physical wear, and functional obsolescence.
- Sales Comparison Approach – Establishes value through analysis of comparable vessel sales and market data, with adjustments made to account for differences in size, condition, and specifications.
- Income Approach – Determines value by assessing the present value of anticipated future earnings generated by the asset.
Final value conclusions are derived through a careful reconciliation of these approaches, ensuring balanced, well-supported results tailored to each client’s needs.
MMS has extensive experience across a diverse range of vessel types, including military sealift command, integrated tug and barge, Great Lakes vessels, inland and coastwise passenger vessels, container and multipurpose, and ocean cruise vessels. We have also performed fleet and terminal evaluations, loss control services, and risk analyses for many of the major inland river transportation ports.
Recognizing the specialized nature of marine asset valuation, our appraisal and research teams work in close collaboration with our surveyors to ensure consistent methodologies, thorough analysis, and strict adherence to professional standards.
To further support our clients, MMS maintains robust proprietary databases covering shallow draft, inland, coastal, and ocean-class vessels operating both domestically and internationally. These resources allow us to deliver timely, data-driven insights that enhance accuracy and support confident decision-making.
